Intercom, Zendesk, tawk.to and LiveChat are the names most teams consider first. They're good products, but each is designed around a particular kind of customer. If you're a small team whose main challenge is language (visitors in many countries, few agents), the trade-offs look different. This comparison is written by the ZhiDesk team, so we've tried hard to be fair: we say where the big tools are better.
| Intercom | Zendesk | tawk.to | LiveChat | ZhiDesk | |

Strengths: a very capable AI agent (Fin), a modern inbox, product tours and in-app messaging. Excellent for SaaS companies with a product-led growth motion.
Watch out for: cost that grows two ways, per seat and per AI resolution. For a small e-commerce or export business that mainly needs humans to answer questions in several languages, you may pay for capabilities you won't use.
Choose Intercom if you're a funded SaaS company that wants AI to resolve a large share of conversations automatically, and you have budget to match.
Strengths: the most complete ticketing platform: email, chat, social, voice, a help centre, deep reporting and a huge marketplace. Mature language-based routing for teams with native speakers.
Watch out for: setup and administration overhead, per-agent pricing across tiers, and add-ons for advanced AI and workforce features. It can be a lot of system for three agents.
Choose Zendesk if you have a real support operation with email volume, SLAs, several channels and someone to administer it.
Strengths: genuinely free live chat with unlimited agents, a ticketing inbox and a knowledge base. Hard to beat on price for a single-language site.
Watch out for: the free model is funded by paid add-ons (such as removing branding, AI assistance or hiring agents). Built-in two-way translation for human agents is limited, so multilingual teams often end up copy-pasting into a translator.
Choose tawk.to if you need basic chat at zero cost and your visitors mostly share your language.
Strengths: a polished, fast agent experience, good sales-oriented features and many integrations. Pairs with sister products for chatbots and help desk.
Watch out for: per-agent pricing, and translation typically comes through integrations rather than being native to every conversation.
Choose LiveChat if you run a sales-heavy chat team, mostly in one or two languages, and value UI polish.
A focused multilingual chat tool fits when most of these are true:
Good fit: online stores, exporters and small SaaS teams that need two-way translation in every chat, a localized widget (18 interface languages), round-robin or load routing, AI-drafted replies that humans approve, and a flat price: US$49/month for 3 seats, US$99 for 8, US$149 for 15, US$199 for 40.
Not a fit (yet): teams that need email ticketing, voice or social inboxes in the same tool; teams that need a large integration marketplace; and teams that require an English agent interface, since the workspace menus are currently in Chinese. Payment is currently by USDT stablecoin rather than card, which some finance teams can't use.
The fastest way to decide is a side-by-side test: install the free trial of two tools, send the same five questions from your phone in Spanish and Arabic, and compare what your agents see.
For small teams that mainly need human live chat, alternatives with flat plan pricing or free tiers, such as tawk.to or ZhiDesk, cost far less. The trade-off is fewer AI automation and in-app messaging features.
Look for a tool with two-way translation for human agents built into every conversation and a widget that auto-detects visitor language. ZhiDesk includes both on every plan.
Often, if your support is mostly website chat with a few agents. Zendesk shines with multiple channels, high email volume and dedicated admins.
